Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi hit out at senior BJP leader LK Advani on Saturday for his alleged propaganda that illegal immigration from Bangladesh was responsible for the ethnic riots in Bodoland Territorial Administered Districts (BTAD).

“What Advani has said is not true. They (Muslim migrants) are all Indian citizens. We condemn his statement,” Gogoi told reporters. He alleged Advani was only trying to aggravate the situation by making such utterances.

“The people taking shelter in the relief camps are all Indians. If there are any illegal migrants, why don’t they (BJP) visit a camp and detect them?” Gogoi asked. He said the BJP was trying to take political mileage out of the situation.

“Both BJP and AGP (Asom Gana Parishad) are playing politics. If they are so serious about the problem, what stopped them from tackling the menace when they were in power? Why was Advani silent then?” asked Gogoi.

The BJP-led NDA was in power during AGP’s second term (1996-2001).

The chief minister claimed that the infiltration of illegal Bangladeshi migrants into India dropped significantly because of the measures taken by his government in the past few years. Gogoi said his government would soon come out with a White Paper outlining the steps taken by his government.

Drawing a comparison, Gogoi said his government in the last term (2006-2011) had referred 58,357 cases involving suspected foreign nationals to various tribunals as against 23,714 cases by the AGP during its second term.

A two-member team of the CBI visited BTAD on Friday. The team took up seven cases for investigation. Gogoi said he would request the agency to probe more cases.

“We have also decided to order a judicial probe. We want to try and find out the cause of the violence. We also want to see if there have been any lapses by the officials,” Gogoi said. He said 1,60,000 inmates had left the relief camps so far.
