A 29-year-old sweeper working with the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) committed suicide on Friday morning, allegedly since he had not been granted leave by his superiors. A source in the police said that the victim, Abid Shakeel Ahmed Sheikh, had been seeking leave from work for a long time.

Sheikh, who hailed from Wamat village in Devas district of Madhya Pradesh, left behind a suicide note in his room at the CISF headquarters located at the Special Operations Group (SOG) office in Juhapura. The victim, who had been working with the CISF for the last eight years, hung himself from the ceiling of his room located on the third floor of the building.

A source said that Sheikh specified in his suicide note that he had taken his life as he had not been granted leave and that he had not wished to continue living a “life of bondage”. This was confirmed by MC Patel, inspector at the Vejalpur police station, where a case in connection with the suicide has been registered.

“It often happens that an employee cannot be granted leave if another has already been granted the same. There is a possibility that Sheikh was refused leave because of this reason,” a source close to the development said.

“Sheikh had asked that he be granted leave on September 19. However, for some technical reason, this was not done. He was asked to take leave on September 20, but he told his superiors he would do so only on October 1, saying that if he had left on September 19, he would have been able to celebrate Eid,” said police inspector GR Gadhvi, who is investigating the case.

A source said that the authorities had been told not to grant leave to employees at that time because of Navratri, in order that a strict vigil may have been maintained in the city, a source said. Sheikh had also taken leave for five days earlier.

A source said that Sheikh had been a happy person and rarely had any problems with others. “It has been revealed that Sheikh did not have any problems with anyone. In fact, he had a jovial time with his colleagues the night before he committed suicide,” a source close to the development said.

Meanwhile, a source said that Sheikh had suffered fractures in an accident earlier and had had rods fitted in his legs, owing to which he had been unable to perform satisfactorily at work.
