Believe it or not. The Maoists kitty has a fund of Rs2,500 crore.

The whopping amount was collected by the rebels, united under the umbrella of CPI(Maoist), from 223 extremist stronghold districts scattered over eight Indian states in the last 12 months.

The revelation was made by a recent confidential report prepared by the central intelligence bureau (IB) and circulated among state home departments of the Maoist-hit states. These eight states are West Bengal, Orissa, Bihar and Jharkhand in eastern India, Chhattisgarh in central India, Maharashtra in western India and Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu in southern India.

According to the report, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Chhattishgarh contributed the maximum in accumulating such a huge reserve. While around Rs1,000 crore came from Jharkhand, West Bengal and Chhattishgarh each contributed another Rs500 crore.

The fourth and fifth rankers in the state-wise break-up were Bihar at Rs200 crore and Andhra Pradesh at Rs100 crore. The sixth, seventh and eighth in the list are Maharashtra which contributed around Rs78 crore, Orissa around Rs37 crore and Tamil Nadu around Rs35 crore.

The main avenues for collecting such a huge fund are extortion, ransoms and regular collection of levies from businessmen, the intelligence report said. The Maoists have also been resorting to illegal opium farming over vast areas in their stronghold belts, which earns them huge profit.

According to the report, the funds are mainly used for procuring sophisticated arms like Insas, AK-series rifles and deadly explosives like RDX and Neogel-90 from India and abroad. “A large part of the fund is utilised for running training camps to train new recruits,” the report said.

It has been stated that besides the parent rebel outfit in Nepal, Indian Maoists have set up a close nexus with other terrorist groups in Bangladesh, Pakistan, Bhutan and Sri Lanka.
