Ramdev to move SC on section 377

Yoga guru Baba Ramdev, 44, is set to assume the posture of a litigant. In his first step, Ramdev will move the Supreme Court on Wednesday, seeking quashing of a Delhi high court judgment that empowered at least 26 lakh practitioners called gays and lesbians to live as they want without the fear of an archaic law that prohibits their sexual orientation.
Ramdev’s lawyer Ajay Gupta said the judgment defied the constitutional understanding regarding article 14 (equality), 21(right to life) and article 15 (discrimination of basis of sex).

Ramdev has been appearing on television programmes, joining issue with protagonists of free life for homosexuals and lesbians and people who don’t believe in having an intimate alliance for sex alone.

Gupta agreed that though Ramdev wasn’t a party before the HC, in a case of “this nature’’ that involves the future of our generation and health of citizens, the SC wouldn’t accept any objection to his being a petitioner. He said, “People suffering from curable diseases and who have different sex orientation can’t plead they are discriminated’’.
