NEW DELHI: India's new-age brand ambassador of traditional yoga may be a controversial figure in the country, but Swami Ramdev is clearly in demand in the West. Ramdev is now going to lead a gathering of 6,000 people at New York's Times Square, where UN secretary general Kofi Annan will also be present. He will also deliver a lecture at Harvard on yoga and science.
Ramdev's spokesperson S K Tejariwala elaborates, "Indian yoga and ayurveda are finally being given the recognition it deserves. The fact that it is being used to promote global peace and prosperity indicates how strong an impact it has made."
A special invitee at the UN Millennium Summit, Ramdev is participating in the global agenda against poverty, a UN initiative that has tied up with Guinness World.
In 2000, 189 countries had adopted 8 millennium goals and had set a deadline to achieve them -- one agenda being to fight against poverty. The stand-up campaign will flag off on 15th October and continue for twenty-fours hours during which people all across the world can stand up as a symbol of respect to the campaign and read out the pledge of the UN Millennium Summit.
