Towns and cities in Saurashtra are now high on the priority list of Gujarat police regarding measures needed to thwart a terrorist attack in the state. In places falling under Rajkot police range, CCTV cameras have been installed at strategic places and the police have started keeping a record of people coming from outside for jobs.
The police have also increased vigilance in industrial areas falling in Rajkot range. Town police stations have been instructed to install CCTV cameras at different places including entry and exit points of towns and also where people gather regularly.
Pravin Sinha, range IG of Rajkot, said the police will install CCTV cameras in all the major towns with the help of people and local civic bodies. “The cameras will be installed in crowded areas to keep watch for suspicious activity,” he said.
Sinha further said that, to begin with, CCTV cameras will be installed at entry and exit points of the towns. “Morbi city is a priority as it is one of the fastest developing towns in the area. Such installations help in keeping watch on an area and in maintaining law and order,” he said.
Rajkot rural police have already installed CCTV cameras at all police stations in the district. The superintendent of police can monitor each police station from his office round the clock.
“Installation of CCTVs at police stations in Surendranagar district has already been done while, in Jamnagar district, this work is still going on,” Sinha said.
He added that in the light of past events and the current crime rate, it had been made mandatory for outsiders coming to the district for employment to register themselves.
“It will be the responsibility of the sarpanch and the factory owner to keep a record of such people and share their records with the police,” Sinha said.
Industrial units in Gondal, Kotda Sangani, Morbi and Wankaner have already shared their records with the police, while records-related work in Lodhika and other districts is still in progress, the range IG said.
