The CPI Monday demanded the Centre to take note of the Tamil Nadu assembly's resolution to reconsider the mercy petitions of three Rajiv Gandhi assassination case convicts and seek clemency for them from the President.

Welcoming the assembly resolution and the Madras High Court's eight week stay on their execution fixed for September 9, party National Secretary D Raja said the central government should take the resolution "with all seriousness".

He said the UPA government should "go back to the President and seek clemency" for the three convicts.

In the resolution, the Tamil Nadu Assembly appealed to President Pratibha Patil to reconsider their mercy pleas.

Murugan, Santhan and Perarivalan, lodged in Vellore Jail, were convicted and sentenced to death in the case relating to the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi during an election rally at Sriperumpudur on May 21, 1991 by an LTTE suicide bomber.
