In a relief to an AIDS patient serving a prison term in the state, the Rajasthan High Court today directed the government to make immediate arrangements for his treatment.

The prisoner had filed an application before the court for suspension of his punishment on the ground of his ailment. He pleaded that his wife had died due to AIDS and that he has four kids to look after.

Ruling on the petition, Justice Mahesh Chandra Sharma yesterday directed the government to immediately take measures for his treatment, besides consulting SMS Hospital here and the AIIMS, New Delhi.

The prisoner, convicted for seven-year rigorous imprisonment on a charge of rape, is lodged in Central Jail Alwar. He had moved the court shortly after his conviction on April 28, this year by additional district and sessions court, Alwar.

Justice Sharma rejected his application for suspension of sentence but directed Secretary (Jails), Department of home affairs to arrange for his treatment under his supervision. The Court also granted meeting rights to his children, who were otherwise restricted as per the Jail Manual.
