After the recommendation of the Lokayukta for his removal, the noose seems to be tightening gradually around Public Works Department (PWD) minister Raj Kumar Chauhan with both CVC and Shunglu Committee finding irregularities in several key CWG infrastructure projects undertaken by his department.

Union home ministry has sought a report from Delhi government about his alleged involvement in protecting a leading resort in a tax evasion case for which the Lokayukta had recommended his removal.

Adding to Chauhan's woes, the CBI on Saturday registered a case against some officials of PWD and a few firms in connection with alleged bunglings in project for construction of the Rs620 crore Barapullah Nullah elevated road which was a key CWG project.

The Chief Technical Examination (CTE) wing of the Central Vigilance Commission in its latest report has also mentioned deficiencies in the project and raised questions on the quality of construction material used in the project.

Six CWG projects executed by the PWD are currently being investigated by the Central Vigilance Commission for alleged financial and managerial lapses.

According to a recent report on deficiencies in Games-related works by CTE wing of the CVC, higher rates, poor quality control and substandard material, among others, were observed in the PWD-approved projects worth Rs1,315.66 crore.

Besides the CVC report, the Prime Minister-appointed Shunglu committee had also slamed the PWD for irregularities in several infrastructure projects, including the Barapullah Nallah elevated road project.

Meanwhile, the home ministry last week directed the Delhi Government to file a report on Chauhan's alleged involvement in sheilding a leading resort in South Delhi from a tax evasion case.

The home ministry's direction came nearly two months after the Lokayukta Justice Manmohan Sarin, in an
unprecedented order, had recommended to President Pratibha Patil to "withdraw her pleasure" for the Minister to continue in office as he "misused" his official position and indicted him for misconduct of "grave nature".

While the decision about Chauhan's fate lies with the President, who has three months to decide on the issue, top sources in the city government said a detailed report on the issue would be sent to the Home Ministry within a couple of days.
