Rains make farmers happy, commuters sad in Ahmedabad

In Surat, there were showers in the morning, and in the evening there were heavy rains. Due to heavy rains, the roads were damaged at many places, leading to traffic jams in various parts of the city.

It has rained in all talukas in the state except Lakhpat in Kutch in the last three days. While it rained heavily in some places, it rained moderately in others.  At least three dams in Saurashtra were reported filled to capacity on Sunday.

On Sunday, Ahmedabad received 14.4 mm rainfall. According to AMC control room, the north zone of the city recorded the maximum rainfall with 22.5 mm. One death was reported from Shahwadi near Narol when a slab fell on a man at a construction site. While in some places trees were uprooted, there were cave-ins in some other parts of the city.

In Saurashtra and Kutch, light to moderate rainfall continued for the second day on Sunday. Due to a good amount of rainfall, Nayka dam in Surendranagar district was overflowing. Kharo dam in Palitana and Lalpari dam in Rajkot were also filled. A man died by drowning in Lathi taluka of Amreli district.

“Nayka dam is overflowing,” district authorities said.
In South Gujarat, heavy showers disrupted normal life. There were reports of water-logging and house collapse. In Surat and other parts of South Gujarat, people stayed indoors. There were, however, no casualties.

The districts of Navsari, Valsad and Dangs also received good showers. Heavy showers made farmers happy, while people enjoyed the change in atmosphere, though some complained of rain woes. At Saputara in Dangs, tourists danced to enjoy rains. 

While an old house collapsed in Navsari district due to heavy rains, a farm labourer in Katasan village in Tapi district lost his house because of heavy rains. Navsari district recorded 3 inches of rain, while Valsad and Dangs recorded 2.5 inches and 4 inches respectively on Sunday. According to met department, more rains are going to lash Surat and South Gujarat region in next 48 hours.

According to the state disaster management control room, 33 deaths have been reported in rain-related incidents in the state since the beginning of this monsoon. An assistance of Rs1.5 lakh has been announced by the state government to the kin of each of the deceased.
