Railway minister Mamata Banerjee today said a modern rail coach factory would come up in Singur if the West Bengal government gave the land to the railways.
Reiterating her earlier statement on the issue, Banerjee said at a railway function here that "if the state gives the land to us we will build the coach factory on 600 acres of land after returning the rest 400 acres to the farmers."
The Trinamool chief had earlier said "if they (state government) give us the land, we can proceed. We can build the ancilliary industry in Dankuni and the two places can be linked by a dedicated rail line."
The leased land at Singur in Hooghly district is still in possession of Tata Motors.
Faced with the Trinamool Congress agitation for return of 400 acres, of the total acquired land, to farmers in Singur, the Tata Motors in October 2008 shifted the small car plant to Sanand in Gujarat.
