Union Agriculture Minister and Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar termed the Third Front a ‘crazy idea’ and said the government formed by it would not sustain for long.

He said his party does not eye prime ministership in 2014 as it would need the support of either of two big parties, Congress or Bharatiya Janata Party.

Pawar, talking exclusively to DNA at his Pune residence, said prime ministership is a big responsibility for Rahul and he will have to prove himself in the Uttar Pradesh elections. “The post of prime minister is a huge responsibility unlike heading any state. I am not saying he is not capable; his father Rajiv too had shouldered the responsibility at a younger age and proved his mettle. Rahul too is working hard in Uttar Pradesh and if he succeeds in gaining more seats there and later in the 2014 Lok Sabha, he can be a candidate for prime ministership. But what if he failed in UP elections,” Pawar said.

“I already have announced that I would not be fighting the 2014 elections, though I won’t be retiring from active politics. The decision about the Rajya Sabha option will be taken by my party,” he said.

“I do not think the Third Front will be a viable option to form a government at Centre in 2014. First of all the parties apart from Congress and BJP do not come together. Mayawati can’t go with Mulayam, DMK can’t stand AIADMK, while the Left parties can’t take Trinmool Congress along. In such a scenario, Left Front cannot be an option when it comes to forming the government.”

Pawar also said the Karnataka porngate incident has dented the image of the BJP and it would badly affect party’s prospects in Uttar Pradesh.
