The Congress president and her son had to rush to the United States to attend to her ailing mother Paola Maino.
Party sources said that she would be back in a couple of days.
The absence of Sonia and Rahul in Parliament and cancellation of a scheduled meeting between the Congress chief and visiting British prime minister David Cameron had earlier raised speculation about her health, but it later came out that they have gone to the US to see Maino, who is in her 80s and suffering from age-related complications.
