Radical Islamists are casting shadows on the golden jubilee celebrations at prestigious Government Medical College to be held on Saturday.

Police have picked-up three students for distributing pamphlets in the campus seeking ban on the cultural programmes terming them vulgar and un-Islamic.

Several anonymous posters in Urdu and English were pasted and distributed in the campus asking students to say no to the celebrations.

“Tormented regions like our des not celebrate. See what is happening around us. Should we dare to celebrate? Please say no to this vulgarity. Please say no these anarchical programmes. Say no to the words of these putrefied minds. We cannot afford to celeberate. Once great Sallahuduan was asked why he never laughs. He replied: .How can I laugh when Al Qudus is under occupation’" reads one poster in English.

The poster in English also tries to draw attention to the deteriorating health care in the college.

However the poster in Urdu is laced with Quranic verses and revolutionary couplets to motivate students to boycott the celebrations. “In the name of culture we are being taught music, disco, catwalk etc. These are aimed to spread the satanic culture among Muslim youth. Please say no to cultural aggression," reads the poster.

Police said they have picked up three guys who were distributing and pasting posters against the show. “We have detained them and they are in our custody,” said a police officer.

The medical college is celebrating 50 years anniversary on Saturday and chief minister Omar Abdullah is going to be the chief guest on the occasion. Several programmes including cultural and musical shows are planned to celebrate the golden jubilee of the institution. Around 1,500 delegates from many countries including United States, United Kingdom, Gulf and other States are participating in these functions.

Undeterred by the threats of radicals, J&K minister for medical education RS Chib flagged off the marathon run organised by Government Medical College in connection with the golden jubilee celebrations.

The run started from Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Complex (SKICC) and culminated at Nishat Bagh in which faculty members, students both boys and girls, and alumni participated.

This is the second time that radical elements cast shadow on the cultural shows in Kashmir. Earlier University of Kashmir gave in to the threats of radicals and cancelled the fundraising musical concert of Ilham - a realisation in the campus on July 5.

However another fundraising show Aagaz – the journey begins, picked up the threads where Ilham had left on July 5 and organised the show at Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Complex. The money realised was donated to the Leprosy patients.

Saim Bhat, the new Kashmiri musical sensation who has two songs — Aye Khuda and Phir Mohobat — in forthcoming Murder 2, performed in the Aagaz show despite getting threats from unknown people.
