After receiving a complaint last Saturday that Nandi forced six inmates to parade in the buff over 300 yards and later made them stand in the same position for hours in front of other prisoners, Sharma and additional IG (prisons) R Mondal visited Dum Dum.
A probe revealed that Nandi had made it a practice to strip prisoners. In June, he punished two other inmates in a similar fashion.
In the course of investigation, Sharma also discovered that there had been attempts to prove Nandi was not involved in the barbaric act, since the jail register showed him absent last Friday when the six prisoners were humiliated.
However, the lie was nailed when jail warders and the victims of Nandi’s atrocities gave statements to the contrary. They confirmed that the barbaric act took place at the instance of Nandi and that he was present in the jail at the time.
After the revelations, Sharma seized the attendance register.
The jail warders and prisoners also confirmed that the nude parade was conducted by Sandip Bandopadhyay, the prison’s disciplinary officer, and S Tudu, chief warder.
Those who testified against Nandi were summoned to the state government headquarters, Writers’ Buildings, in Kolkata on Monday and questioned by senior officials of the prisons department. Sources said soon, departmental proceedings would be initiated against the Dum Dum jailer.
