Police today resorted to baton charge and tear gas shelling in Baramulla town and Nowhatta area in Srinagar to disperse stone-pelting youth after Friday prayers ended, official sources said.

A group of youth held protest demonstrations and started pelting stones at police and paramilitary personnel in Baramulla town after hardline Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani addressed a Friday gathering there, they said.

Security personnel fired several rounds of tear smoke shells to chase away the protestors after a police lathi charge failed to disperse them.

Geelani, in his address, called for a two-day shutdown in Kashmir on September 6 and 7 against what he termed as "the unabated spate of arrests by police".

Violent protests involving dozens of youth broke out in Nowhatta area after Friday prayers, they said.

The protestors, however, were chased away by police within an hour.
