Security personnel at the prime minister’s residence went into a tizzy on Thursday late afternoon as more than 150 supporters of Anna Hazare landed there and started raising slogans against the government.
After Anna’s call to gherao the prime minister’s residence, the Delhi Police has made elaborate arrangements around 7 Race Course Road.
All roads leading to the high security area were barricaded. But Hazare’s supporters dodged the police by arriving there in two-wheelers and TSR.
The protesters, who came in small groups, were taken into custody, bundled into DTC buses and taken away from the high security area, police sources said.
However, they kept regrouping and raising slogans. Many of them were wearing Gandhi caps inscribed with “I am Anna” and had placards in favour of the Jan Lokpal Bill.
When prime minister Manmohan Singh was holding an all-party meeting at his residence, around 50 people — most of them women — reached the area and began raising slogans.
As there were not women officers present there, the police could not take the protesters away and around ten of them almost reached the 7 RCR’s reception, where the special protection group (SPG) intercepted them.
As preventive measures, the police had closed four Metro stations in the vicinity of the PM’s residence. Hundreds of protesters were detained on the way, when they were trying to reach the area.
Earlier, the Delhi police apprised the Union home ministry of the violations of the undertaking signed by Team Anna before starting the protest at the Ramlila Maidan. First, Team Anna used loudspeaker after 10 pm; secondly they gave provocative speech calling on people to gherao the prime minister’s residence and thirdly the government doctor was not allowed to carry out routine medical check of Anna Hazare.
