Reacting to the remarks allegedly made by Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati on Mahatma Gandhi, a member of the Law Commission today suggested amending
Representation of the People Act to disqualify lawmakers who insult national figures.
Mayawati allegedly described Mahatma Gandhi as a "naatakbaaz" a few days ago.
Law Commission member Tahir Mamhood said The Representation of the People Act, 1951, should be amended to "disqualify people who choose to violate it."
He also said the Prevention of Insult to National Honour Act, 1971, "must be amended to make a suitable provision to protect the fair name of the Father of the Nation".
The name of the Mahatma "deserves to be legally protected," Mahmood, also a former chairman of the National Minorities Commission, added in a statement.
