A proposal for construction of 564-km road along Indo-Nepal border in Bihar for promoting trade and commerce between the two countries would be soon brought before the cabinet for approval, home minister P Chidambaram said today.

About Rs1752 crore would be spent on the construction of the road, he said while laying the foundation stone for an integrated checkpost at Pantoka to be built at a cost of Rs120 crore in East Champaran district of Bihar which would be manned by SSB.

"The construction of the roads along the border will help strengthen the bond of friendship between India and Nepal and will also create employment and help in development of the border areas," Chidambaram said adding a similar check-post would be set up at Jogbani in the state in May.

Chief minister Nitish Kumar had drawn Chidambaram's attention to the state's demand for construction of roads.

He thanked the Bihar government for facilitating acquisition of 254 acres for the integrated check post in East Champaran and said the construction work would start this month and would be completed by June next year.

Referring to protests by local farmers whose land was acquired for the check post, the Union minister said, "All steps will taken to reach compensation to each of them".

"We will not allow injustice at any stage ... We have made available Rs 22.25 crore to the state government for compensating the farmers whose lands have been acquired," he added.

The Bihar chief minister urged Chidambaram to take up the demand for special status to Bihar at the appropriate level at the Centre.

"It is a long-standing demand of the stat ... and it has become the demand of all political parties and each person in Bihar ... We know that you will try to ensure justice with the state.

"We don't want special central assistance or funds ... We want the special category state status which will help in inclusive growth of the nation," he said.

The chief minister too assured the farmers of the area of proper compensation for the land acquired from them.

He also asked the SSB personnel to maintain cordial relations with the local people. "We are at the service of the SSB and its officials are welcome for any help or cooperation they may need ... But we want that there should not be any tension between them and the local people."

The chief minister said rule of law has been established in Bihar under the present NDA government. "We ensured speedy trial of criminal cases and achieved remarkable success," he said adding that more than 45000 accused persons were convicted in various criminal cases in the past four years.

Referring to the recent gangrape of a Japanese tourist at Bodh Gaya, Kumar said the accused had been arrested and charge sheet was filed in the case in a record time of two-three days.
