Women in the national capital could think of hassle-free ride in special coaches in the metro network if a proposal by a government panel goes through.

Considering the inconvenience being faced by women commuters in the metro network, a legislative panel of Delhi assembly has recommended introduction of separate coaches for the fairer sex in all trains across the routes.

"There should be special coaches for women passengers as they often face a lot of difficulties in travelling in overcrowded trains," the Committee on Women and Child Welfare said in its latest report.

Chairperson of the committee Barkha Singh said it has become very difficult for women to travel on metro trains during the rush hours and the recommendation for having separate coaches for them should be taken seriously.

Taking a serious view about safety of women working in call centres and other businesses who work till late in the night, the committee also recommended mandatory transportation facilities for them by the management of such firms.

"It should be made mandatory on the part of the management of call centres and other business to make fool-proof transportation arrangements for all women employees who work till late in the night," the report said.

As per estimates, 10,000-odd women employees are working in various call centres in the national capital with shifts ending or beginning at odd hours.

The nine-member committee also asked the government to make serious efforts to curb prostitution and said a fund to rehabilitate sex workers should be set up.

"A special fund should also be formed to help children of the victims of sex-related offences. The government should take measures to take appropriate care of such children.

Arrangements should be made to keep these children in boarding schools," it said.

Expressing serious concern over shortage of accommodation for working women, the committee recommended setting up of adequate numbers of hostels for such women by government agencies.

It also asked the Delhi development authority to provide land to the city government for setting up such hostels.

"A large number of girls from the northeast work in the city. Most of them feel insecure staying as paying guests. We should build more hostels for working women," the report said.
