The state government is likely to table in the coming assembly session the Bombay Prohibition (Gujarat Amendment Act) 2009 bill which was rejected by the previous Governor, SC Jamir. The government had passed the bill in assembly last July after the infamous hooch tragedy in Ahmedabad which claimed 140 lives.

Highly placed sources said, "After serious consideration, the government has decided to present the bill again in assembly without making any changes as suggested by the then Governor SC Jamir. The bill will be placed on December 17 or 18 by minister of state for home." The governor had not given any specific comment on the bill but had suggested that the govt take public opinion and involve NGOs in the process.

Reacting strongly to the criticism by the opposition Congress during the hooch tragedy, chief minister Narendra Modi had decided to take a strong step of amending the prohibition law. The new amendment in the law was also aimed to give one year's imprisonment to the police officials responsible for the hooch tragedy or any serious crime related to prohibition. The punishment would not be less than seven years in such an offence and it could be even 10 years imprisonment or a life term.

The amended law has made it clear that all the conveyances and  vehicles used for transporting "latha'' exceeding certain quantity shall be liable to be confiscated as govt property.
