With fasting TRS chief K Chandrasekhara Rao's health deteriorating, prime minister Manmohan Singh today enquired about his condition from Congress MPs from the Telangana region.

Singh, who arrived from Russia last night, met a couple of Congress MPs from the Telangana region and enquired from them about the health condition of Rao, who is on an indefinite fast for the past 10 days demanding a separate Telangana state.

Andhra Congress sources said the prime minister also asked the MPs about the situation in the state arising out of the pro-Telangana protests. The informal meeting took place in Lok Sabha.

The sources also said Telangana Congress MPs have sought an appointment from the prime minister to urge him to take an early decision on the statehood issue. The MPs are also understood to have told the prime minister that the situation in Andhra was "serious and urgent steps have to be taken to bring it under control".

The sources also said that Singh would hold discussions with senior Congress leaders and MPs from the region on the issue today.
