President asks doctors to take up rural postings

The president said that by serving in rural areas the doctors be doing good work for the nation and the stint will be a valuable addition to their professional experience.

President Pratibha Patil today asked young doctors to respond positively to the call of the government to take up rural postings.

At the 37th annual convocation of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Patil said, "I urge young doctors of the country to devote some years of their professional lives to working in rural areas..."

"...by serving in rural areas, not only would you be doing good work for the nation, but the stint will be a valuable addition to your professional experience," she said.

The president said, "The nation values you as a highly skilled human resource with great potential to contribute to building the brain bank of India and creating a better society."

The president also agreed with the fact that hospitals were being overburdened with patients. The doctor to patient ratio is about one is to one thousand five hundred, while the recommended ratio is one is to two hundred and fifty. As such the ministry of health and family welfare is making efforts to bring in path breaking changes to overcome the acute shortage of doctors, nurses and medical personnel in the health sector, she said.

Applauding the government's effort in making health care facilities accessible in the remote areas she said, "Schemes like National Rural Health Mission have added over seven lakh ASHAs, over 70,000 ANMs and nurses and over 15,000 MBBS and AYUSH doctors to the public health care system."
