Pre-Valentine’s Day flower sales surge across India

Florists across India are enjoying brisk business, as the surge in flower sales has increased with Valentine’s Day round the corner.

Nitin Kumar, a rose cultivator from Nainital, said during the Valentine season, florists do good business.

“We want flowers to be available, especially after February 10, so that we can sell them on the Valentine’s Day on February 14. We normally get demands from Delhi, Lucknow, Chandigarh and local markets,” said Kumar.

St. Valentine’s Day is observed as a day for lovers to express their feelings to their partners.

In Chennai, the National Horticulture Mission and the Tamil Nadu Government have initiated efforts to promote rose cultivation, said S. Kumaran, a member of the state Department of Horticulture.

“We expect around Rupees 25 crores earning in next year through export of rosesflowers to European countries, that to, during the Valentines period,” he added.

Kumaran further said that nearly 2,722 hectares of land is being utilised for flower cultivation, out of which 433 acres is being used for growing roses.

Valentine’s Day dates back to 496 A.D.
