The CBI has questioned former Gujarat Minister Amit Shah in connection with the 2006 Tulsiram Prajapati fake encounter case that the central agency was investigating on directions of the Supreme Court.

The questioning of Shah, a close aide of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, was done last week in New Delhi by a CBI team probing the Prajapati case, top officials said in Ahmedabad on Tuesday.

According to officials, Shah, who is out on bail after being arrested for allegedly being the kingpin in the 2005 Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake police encounter case, would be questioned further if required.

Shah was arrested in July 2010 by CBI in the Sohrabuddin fake encounter case, but was released on bail by the Gujarat High Court in October same year.

CBI's application for cancellation of Shah's bail is still pending in the Supreme Court.

On April 8, last year the Supreme Court had ordered CBI to probe the encounter of Prajapati, stated to be an eyewitness in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh encounter case involving former state minister Shah.

The apex court had issued directions on an appeal filed by Prajapati's mother Narmada Bai, and had also criticised the tardy investigations conducted by the Gujarat police in the killings, in which, besides politicians, top police officials are also involved.

Prajapati was gunned down by Gujarat police near Ambaji in Banaskantah in December 2006.

The state CID, which had probed the case prior to CBI, had completed investigation into the case and concluded that it was fake encounter and arrested 11 policemen including an IPS officer.
