The Vadilal Sarabhai hospital, it seems, has taken no lessons from previous incidents of power failure. On Friday, the life of a patient undergoing angioplasty at the Cathlab was put at high risk, due to the absence of generator support when the electricity went off.
In fact, the power failure that lasted from 11:30 am to 4:00 pm left several patients gasping for relief. Leader of opposition in the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), Surendra Baxi, raised questions over the VS Hospital authorities' irresponsible behaviour. "Luckily, the angioplasty got over within 15 minutes of the power failure, and without any complications. But the point here is, they need to get sets of generators to support medical equipments in case of power failure. Why is the hospital putting patients' lives at risk with their indifferent attitude?" asked Baxi.
He said that in VS Hospital, only the newly developed trauma centre has the facility of generators. Even the burns ward does not have generators, leaving patients in great pain at the time of electricity failure.
Baxi also pointed out that despite the official date for the monsoon to set in having passed, the civic body bosses have not bothered to stop the digging work being carried out in various places. "It is important to stop all kinds of digging work and encroachment removal at this time, so that the citizens are not put at risk," said Baxi.
Congress corporator Himmatsinh Patel said that during monsoon, when water borne diseases are on the rise, some areas continue to get contaminated water. "Moreover, in the city with a population of about 55 lakh, the municipal corporation has only three super sucker machines. Citizens have to plead to officials to acquire thosemachines, to get the drainage lines cleaned," he said.
