Civic officials on Friday pulled down a portion of a newly constructed school building erected on a piece of encroached government land at Bhata village in Hazira. The school was to start functioning in a few months.

According to information, officials of SUDA (Surat Urban Development Authority) and SMC carried out the demolition at LP Savani School campus at Bhata village. The officials removed the portion of the structure that had been built on a piece of 15,000 sq ft encroached land.

The land belongs to irrigation department and the school authorities had not taken any clearance from the department for construction. Sources said that the piece of land had been encroached upon by filling mud into a canal meant for carrying rainwater.

More than 100 officials from SUDA and SMC took part in the operation that began in the morning and continued till late in the night. "The irrigation department said that the land was owned by it and no NOC for it had been issued to the school authorities. After getting an official written complaint, the demolition process was undertaken. We took the help of SMC west zone for heavy machineries, including JCB, for the operation," said SUDA town planner PC Prasad.

The authorities had served a notice to the school trust on Thursday about the demolition to be carried out on Friday. When demolition began, school authorities made frantic calls to politicians and bureaucrats to stop the operation but all their attempts proved futile.

Sources said that construction of the school was going on for a long time and it was nearing completion. School authorities wanted to start a CBSE-affiliated school in a few months.
