Manipur chief minister O Ibobi Singh has been instrumental in securing Congress’ landslide victory in the state assembly polls, but there are speculations that he may not become chief minister for the third consecutive term.

According to the reports, Ibobi's political opponent and commerce and industry minister Y Erabot Singh is a strong contender for the post.

It is under Ibobi that Congress did a hat-trick — he had single-handedly brought the party to power in 2002 and 2007.

Erabot is said to have visited New Delhi after being called by the All India Congress Committee.

Erabot is known as a staunch critic of Ibobi. He has all along played the role of an Opposition member, castigating government wherever it faulted.

It is, perhaps, this political rivalry that Ibobi had set up his nephew O Henry against Erabot in Wangkhei constituency this election. But Erabot emerged triumphant.

Henry had contested on the Manipur State Congress Party ticket.
