If things go as planned, there will be fewer accidents by the AMTS buses in the coming year. A source in the traffic police department told DNA that a plan has been worked out by the department in cooperation with the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) to impart training to drivers of AMTS buses. The plan follows a spate of accidents in which AMTS buses ran over innocent people.

A source said a meeting of senior police and AMC officials was convened on Wednesday afternoon during which a plan to impart training to AMTS drivers was discussed.

Ironically, an AMTS bus driver had ran over a biker on Gandhi bridge the very night. When contacted, DCP (Traffic) MM Anarwala said, “The responsibility lies both on the people who drive two wheelers and the bus drivers who get reckless at times. Grave accidents happen because of their lethargic attitude.” Anarwala said that the plan to train AMTS bus drivers will be implemented as soon as possible.

The source also said that as part of the plan, the department aims to train drivers hired by private operators too. “The aim is not just to impart training to these drivers but also to create traffic awareness among these drivers,” said Anarwala. According to official figures, there are over 800 AMTS drivers in the city who are likely to be trained as part of the plan.

The department has launched an intensive drive to nab traffic violators. Officials said that a swoop down on underage drivers who violate rules is already in progress.

Figures provided by the department show that while there were 263 registered deaths due to accidents in the year 2008, the number was 165 in 2009. What more, while 2,519 offences were registered in 2008, there were 1,300 offences
registered in 2009.
