Temples in the city are increasingly becoming notorious for thievery. And considering the number of chains being snatched and senior citizens being robbed thus, city cops have embarked on a new initiative - that of patrolling temple vicinities in the city, to keep fake cops and chain snatchers at bay.

It is mainly senior citizens, women especially, that suffer at the hands of these thieves and impostors. And with the numbers of these crimes escalating, the police have decided to deploy teams of motorbike-borne cops in the areas surrounding temples. Also, banners and placards are being set up at crucial points, especially places of worship, where most of these incidents take place.

Cops are also organizing events to educate the citizens, so that they are vigilant about fake cops. In one such initiative, on Wednesday, police officials from zone one held a meeting at a garden in Fatehwadi in Paldi, where they addressed some 50 women.

"We told the women assembled there, that a genuine cop will never ask them to take their jewellery off and give it to someone else, even if for safekeeping. That apart, we gave them some basic safety measures that they need to keep in mind, vis-à-vis chain snatching and burglaries," said Ellisbridge police inspector Jayveer Gadhvi, who addressed the gathering.

Through the placards, the police have appealed to the citizens to not believe people asking them to take off their belongings, and to help catch such people instead.
