The police and naxals exchanged fire in the densely wooded area of Damrancha in Aheri taluka, in Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra, this morning.
No casualties had been reported from both sides, police sources said.
A police team, consisting of the C-60 commandos and local policemen, was carrying out a combing operation to flush out naxals in Damrancha forest this morning when the ultras opened fire.
The gun-battle lasted an hour, said Gadchiroli Police's spokesperson, S Kangude, adding that the naxals fired only a few rounds.
Additional force had been sent to the area to track down the attackers.
