Describing the post-midnight crack-down on Baba Ramdev and his followers in Delhi as "Ravanlila on Ramlila Maidan" and the "worst day" in Indian history, Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi today held Prime Minister Manmohan Singh responsible for the development.

"After what I heard and saw about yesterday's incident at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi, I feel it would have been better if I had not been the chief minister, my hands would not have been tied, and I would have gone to Delhi and started a big war there," Modi said in his speech at the inauguration of a new dental college in Khokhara area of the city.

All that Ramdev was asking was that the Prime Minister should state that he would bring back black money within a certain period, Modi said.

The lathi-charge by the police while people were asleep, was "a Ravanlila at Ramlila Maidan", he said.

Condemning the incident as the "worst day in the history of India", Modi said, "The PM had said during the 2009 elections that he would develop mechanism to bring back black money stashed in Swiss banks within 100 days of coming to power. But today, it is two years and nothing has happened.

"Congress will have to answer 120 crore people of India about the use of violence on innocent people.

"I would like to tell Prime Minister Manmohan Singhji --the nation is not ready to believe now that you are not involved in this. This incident took place under your rule. You are directly responsible for this."

"They (Congress) are known for lying. In the evening Congress leader says that they had accepted Ramdev's demand and talks were going on. And suddenly what happened in the night?," Modi added.

Modi also appealed youths of the country to continue their agitation against corruption and black money.

"I want to appeal to the youths of this nation, that don't tolerate such atrocities. Fight against corruption is also needed because if we don't raise our voices, even good people tend to become corrupt," he added.

Modi said that despite being in power he was with Ramdev in the fight against corruption. "I am fully aware of the consequences but being afraid of atrocities is not my style," he added.

"If it is a crime to raise voice against corruption, then it is acceptable to us. I am ready to face the same penalty given to Baba Ramdev. This country cannot be run this way," the chief minister said.

"This is not an agitation against one party, nor against one government. This is an effort to rescue the nation from a rotten system," he said, suggesting that Congress members should also join in.
