The arrest of three members of the notorious Irani gang by the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB), Surat and Maharashtra police on Tuesday has brought huge relief to the cops in Ahmedabad as well. The Ahmedabad police claim that the gang was involved in at least 30 cases in the city.
The trio has been identified as Kabir Md Sheikh, Zuber Md Sheikh and Sarfu Md Sheikh, all residents of Iraninagar in Bhiwandi, Maharashtra.
The DCB Surat arrested the three with the help of mobile locations found from a spot in Surat, a couple of days ago. Sarfu Mohammad is the leader of the gang, while two more members are yet to be arrested.
"Posing as policemen the trio had attempted to rob an elderly woman at Adajan area in Surat a few days ago. However, the woman did not fall in their trap and started screaming. The frightened robbers fled the spot, leaving behind their motorcycle," ZR Desai, inspector of DCB, said.
Desai added that on the basis of the vehicle registration number, the contact detail of the owner was traced. The registered cell number along with the documents of the vehicle with RTO was kept under surveillance and, based on the locations, the three were arrested.
Sources said that the gang operated in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi. In Gujarat, the gang is wanted in more than 100 cases, of which 10 are registered in Surat.
In Ahmedabad, according to joint commissioner of police, sector-one, Satish Sharma, the trio is wanted in dozens of cases. He said that it is estimated that they might have committed at least 30 offences across the city.
"The gang used to target elderly people walking on the roads. They would approach the person, posing as cops. The gang would ask their victims to render their valuables as part of police checking. The moment the victim would deposit the valuables, the gang would disappear," Desai said.
