'If a nation does not allow scribes from another country, it shows that there is something to hide. If it continues like this, then Sri Lanka cannot be called as a democratic country', said party state secretary D Pandiyan.
Tamil Nadu CPI today urged the Centre to immediately prevail on Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa to allow Indian journalists access to the centres where displaced Tamils have been housed to ascertain their 'real plight'.
"After the ethinc war, Rajapaksa had promised that he will rehabilitate 3.5 lakh displaced Tamils. He also said he had
constructed houses for them. If this is the case, why he is not allowing anyone, especially mediapersons, to his nation to know about the real situation of the affected people", party state secretary D Pandiyan told reporters here.
"If a nation does not allow scribes from another country, it shows that there is something to hide. If it continues like this, then Sri Lanka cannot be called as a democratic country', he said.
"Therfore,at this juncture, Centre has to intervene immediately and prevail on Sri Lankan Government to allow Indian journalists meet affected Tamils living over there", he said.
He said CPI would continue its demonstration across the state demanding DMK government to fulfill its promise on allotting houses to homeless and cultivable lands to landless farmers.
Pandiyan also urged the state government to start its Arasu Cable TV and stop operation of private cable service providers.
On the recent suspension of IAS officer Uma Sankar, Pandiyan said that false cases has been foisted against him.
To a question whether his party had discussions with any political party on poll ties for the coming assembly elections, Pandiyan said "our high command has instructed us to hold talks on poll ties with any political party that is non-BJP and non-Congress".
