Plying of private boats banned, ghats ready for Chhath

Plying of private boats in the Ganga has been banned and Ghats along rivers and ponds across the state have been cleaned and spruced up with lights for devotees who would throng tomorrow for celebrating Chhath -worshipping the Sun - in Bihar.

In the state capital, the district administration banned plying of private boats for 24 hours, beginning 10am tomorrow, in the entire stretch of river Ganges in view of the festival.

District magistrate, JK Sinha said that a control room was set up at the Banipur club with all facilities, including videography and river patrolling.

Over 100 boats with divers and police jawans will carry out patrolling all through the 78 ghats falling in this stretch, he said, adding about 25 ambulances, including those run by the State Health Society, with teams of doctors would be positiond at some important ghats, Sinha said.

Similar arrangements were in place in other parts of he state, official sources said.

Meanwhile, governor D Konwar and chief minister Nitish Kumar greeted the people on the occasion of Chhath.

The Sun, considered the god of power and soul, is worshipped during this festival to promote happiness, wealth and progress, Kumar said and appealed to the people to celebrate the festival with peace.

The four-day festival is celebrated as 'Naha Kha' (holy bath and eating), the second day is known by 'Kharna',  the third and fourth day is 'Sanjhiya Arghya' (offering prayers to setting Sun) and 'Paran-Bihaniya Arghya' (offering prayers to rising Sun) respectively.

'Kharna' facilitates the devotees to end their day-long fast in the evening after sunset. Thereafter they would go on a fast for the next 36 hours.
