You won't complain of overspeeding next time when you travel in Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS). A day after DNA reported that lack of speed governors and monitoring of buses have made BRTS unsafe, the Ahmedabad Janmarg Limited (AJL), which runs the service, woke up to the situation and decided to restrict speed limit to 60 kmph for its swanky buses by putting speed governance equipment.

A cyclist had died on Friday morning after a BRTS bus hit his cycle near Anjali crossroads. On Saturday morning, AJL instructed the bus operator, Chartered Associates, to install speed governance equipments to restrict the bus speed to 60 km per hour.

AJL officials said that, it might take a few days to install the equipment but looking at the increasing number of fatal accidents they are also thinking of putting in place a strict monitoring system to control reckless driving for international award-winner, BRTS.

"We have instructed the contractor to install speed governors. The equipment would not allow the driver to exceed a speed limit of 60 kmph. This would allow us to relax at least with respect to overspeeding," said a senior AJL official.

Municipal commissioner and chairman of AJL, IP Gautam said the AJL is  also working towards restricting the increasing attrition rate of trained BRTS drivers.

AJL officials are also in a mood to increase vigil so as to keep a check on drivers. "Commuters' safety is important for us. And so, apart from installing machines, we would also take manual help. We would go for a third party vigil wherein, a team can make surprise inspection on drivers and services. This would help us get proper feedback and we can improve upon the necessary areas," said the senior AJL official.

It's good that the AJL is setting up 60 kmph maximum speed limit for its drivers, but is it safe to drive at this speed on crossroads? Another senior AJL official is a bit skeptical.

"If there is speed governor equipment in the bus, the maximum speed limit should be 55 kmph. This would make driving safe in the corridor and also on crossroads, wherein, majority of the accidents have taken place so far," said the official.
