Animal rights organisation People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has demanded action against the civic administration of Churu district for allegedly brutally killing a donkey in violation of laws.

Referring to a video footage taken by a local on August 7, the NGO alleged a donkey was killed by a bulldozer of Nagar Parishad which was called by locals on apprehension that the donkey who was sniffing the carcass of a dead dog was rabid.

"The driver of the bulldozer killed the animal. He knocked the donkey to ground and repeatedly slammed the animal on the head with the shovel of the machine," a PETA release said on Tuesday.

"PETA sent a letter to Churu police and district administration. It points out that the Nagar Parishad acted on the complaint without even involving a government veterinarian."

"The manner in which the donkey was tormented and killed is in direct violation of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960," the release added.
