People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India has urged people to stop eating fish holding that fishing industry was "a monument to animal suffering, environmental degradation and serious health risks."

Addressing a press conference after releasing a study report on fishing industry here, PETA senior campaign coordinator Nikunj Sharma said the industry has made catching and raising fish every bit cruel and destructive.

Commercial fishing devastates ecosystem. 'The population of deep-water life forms that are either hauled up in the nets or crushed by nets wheels during botton trawling can take decades to recover', he said.

Sharam also wanted regulation in fishing industry in the country.

According to the report, fish feel pain as all animals do. Because fish have a large concentration of nerve endings in their mouths, fish caught on hooks experience severe pain when they were pulled out of water, the report said.

It said as fish flesh and fish fat can contain extremely high concentrations of chemical residues, eating fish presents a serious health risk.
