Rajajinagar is a residential locality in the west of Bangalore. Considered a cultured and calm locality, residents here have no idea how it slid from the 18th rank to 21st this year in the best of localities survey by DNA-AZ.

But for the dragging Metro work that has disturbed the rhythm of life here, people seem to have no major complaint.

Rajajinagar has everything that a family life requires — parks, playgrounds, places of worship, educational institutions, shops, and restaurants. In fact, they have a surfeit of everything if one goes by the number: 25 educational institutions, 20 parks, two big playgrounds and eight small ones, 16 shrines including two churches and one Jain temple, 12 banks and enough, though narrow, roads, shops, markets, restaurants and plenty of other places to hang out.

A senior resident, Rama Rao, reflects the general feel of content, “This locality has all the amenities one requires. The easy accessibility to bus serve or railway is a plus point. Hospitals and nursing homes are enough to take care of the one-lakh plus population,” says he.

Rao attributes the fall in ranking from the 18th position to the 21st to the narrow roads and the on-going Metro construction.

“The place has gone down in the ranking due to narrow roads and Metro construction that has thrown the calm of the place off the rails,” says he.

Students and other youth have no serious grievance either.
“There is a theatre, many parks, food joints,” say Arpitha N and Divya S, both students. But they wish the Metro finishes the work fast and goes away leaving them in peace.

“If the Metro folds its tents in two years, we will be happy,” they say making fun of the Metro claim that it will soon finish its works.
Another student, Shruthi Yogananda, believes the hawkers and criers on the footpaths may have proved a hindrance to the well-maintained status of the locality.

Rajajinagar may not be on top but it deserves to be in the top layer as the most liveable locality, say  residents. Local councillor HR Krishnappa is proud of representing the locality.

"The area is beautiful. It is better than other localities because it caters to different age groups. I am privileged to represent it in the civic body,” says he.
