The denizens of Vadodara will no longer have to stand in long queues to pay their taxes as the city's civic body is planning to go hi-tech. The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) is planning to set up interactive kiosks in all the ward offices making it easier for people to pay their taxes in a jiffy.

The kiosks are one of the proposals awaiting Vadodara municipal commissioner Ashwini Kumar's nod. "We expect to receive the commissioner's approval by the first week of December after which tenders will be invited. The tentative plan is to install the kiosks by December end," said Shamik Joshi, director, IT & system analyst, VMC.

In all, the city will have 13 kiosk machines - 12 machines in all ward offices and one in VMC's office of marriage registration at Badamdi Baug. "Each kiosk machine will cost VMC around Rs2.5 lakh and the total installation cost will be around Rs30 lakh," Joshi added.

An interactive kiosk is a small machine with a computer screen that displays required information about a selected field. The kiosk lets the citizens interact through its touch screen, sound and motion video and also enables payment of taxes by accepting currency notes. The implementation of this idea would make VMC the first in the entire state to have such hi-tech machines in all the wards of the city.

Speaking to DNA, deputy municipal commissioner of VMC, Chandrakant Makwana said, "The basic idea is to have a 'queueless' processing of tax payment so that we can have faster transactions and the staff doesn't face the burden of dealing with a long queue of tax-payers."

Apart from payment of taxes, the kiosks will also help people know more about the city.

"Initially, we will begin with property tax payment and gradually all types of taxes would be included in the process. In the next phase, we will include the informative display," added Makwana.
