Seventeen years after the demolition of the Babri Masjid, political parties today traded charges, with Congress and Samajwadi Party (SP) holding BJP and Sangh Parivar responsible and the main Opposition dubbing the Liberhan report as a "national
joke".

The Liberhan Commission report, which said the top BJP leadership had a "culpable" role in the demolition of the 16th century mosque at Ayodhya, generated heat in the Rajya Sabha after enough of bad blood was witnessed in the Lok Sabha in the last two days.

In identical references to Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Congress and SP said the former prime minister cannot evade responsibility.

"Mr Vajpayee shares some guilt...." noted lawyer and senior Congress leader Abhishek Singhvi said adding, "he cannot run with the communal hare and hunt with a secular hound".

However, if the former prime minister, felt that he was aggrieved by the Commission, he could go to court and get the remarks against him expunged, Singhvi said.

BJP picked holes in the report and described it as a "national joke and national embarrassment".

Leader of Opposition Arun Jaitley said the Commission was headed by a "puny judge" who took 17 years for "self-employment" and thus the report needs to be debunked.

The emotive debate was marked by frequent disruptions and clashes mainly among Congress, BJP and SP.
