Though the first paper of the SSC exam was easy for most students, several exam centres reportedly faced problems which angered both parents and students. In one case, parents created a ruckus at Shree Ram Bali Vidya Mandir in Paldi on Friday, after authorities refused to give extra time for delay caused while distributing papers.

The authorities allowed extra time to candidates only after much deliberation.

The candidates at the school were given entry at 10am, which is the actual time for the exam to start. Added to that, students received their question papers half an hour late and weren't even given extra time in the end to compensate for the loss. This angered the students who called up their parents.

Gradually, the situation worsened and the parents beat up the centre coordinator Shashikant Tiwari. The police and the district education officer of Ahmedabad city, RI Patel were called in to control the situation. Hundreds of parents present at the school campus demanded that the students should be called in and should be given extra time to complete the paper.

However, Patel refused to grant extra time to the students once they were out and suggested the option of re-exam which would be taken in a few days. But parents protested against this suggestion as they feared that the board would deliberately bring out a tough paper for the students then. Another demand by the parents to grant 15 marks as grace to all the students was refused by the DEO.

Several students and parents also complained that the supervisors were ill informed about several examination procedures. "They guided us wrongly in filling up the details and later when they realised that they made an error, they told us to rectify it using a whitener, which is not allowed in board exams. Moreover, the OMR sheets in which we used the whitener will not consider our answers at all," said a student Vishruti Shah.

Sources say that this being the first time the school was made an exam centre, the supervisors lacked basic information.

It took nearly four hours for the matter to get settled after the DEO consulted principal secretary of GSHSEB, Hasmukh Adhia. Finally, a consensus was arrived at, at 5:30pm when the students were granted the extra half an hour of exam time.

But by that time some students had already left the venue. There are chances that those who missed the extra time are likely to create more trouble for the authorities.

Board officials said that the parents forced the board to take such a decision and the issue will be decided after due discussion. "The board doesn't think granting half an hour time after the exam is right. It is totally unfair for those students who had already left the exam centre. So we need to think about them as well, "said an official.

A similar incident was reported at Sunflower School in Vejalpur, where the question
papers were not distributed on time. This angered the students and they started creating a ruckus.

The question papers were distributed only at 10:20 am and then the situation came under control. Extra time however, was granted to the students there.
