About 300 parents of students of various English medium schools in the city held a meeting on Saturday and protested against the recent fee hike by many city-based English medium schools. The meeting was organized by Jagega Gujarat Sangharsh Samiti. The parents allege that these schools have made primary education more expensive than MBA or engineering courses.

According to the organizer of the meeting Naresh Shah, parents feel crushed under the burden of fees for their kids, so it's high time that something was done about it. "We demand a uniform fee structure for all schools, and it should be governed by a central authority," said Shah. He said that the government must form a committee to stop schools from imposing fee increments every year. He also gave examples of four English medium schools that had retracted from fee rise after recent protests from parents.

To stop the schools from increasing the fees at their discretion, these parents also want a nodal committee to approve such fee rise. "Just like electricity rates can't be hiked without taking permission of a central body, schools fees should be brought under such a body," said Prakash Kapadiya. He also demanded that schools should not collect more than Rs.6000 per year as fees. "A school in Kalol is providing excellent teaching for just Rs.3000 per year, so why are other schools charging huge amounts?" opined Namrata Bhavsar, member of the committee.

These parents also demanded that primary education and not just secondary education be made grantable. These parents also allege that all the rules regarding capitation fees, development charges, and free education for backward class students have been flouted by many schools.

"We want a clear policy and intervention from the government regarding primary education and its fee structure", said Naresh Shah. He also announced that students and parents will go on strike in the first week of June.
