Pakistani rangers killed a Border Security Force (BSF) soldier in a ceasefire violation along the international border (IB) by firing indiscriminately on the Indian forward posts in Arnia sub-sector of RS Pora in Jammu on Saturday night.

JS Oberio, deputy inspector general (DIG) of BSF at Jammu frontier, said Pakistani hostile fire targeted the Budwar post at Arnia at 7.25pm which was retaliated with the exchange of firing continuing for about 25 minutes. A BSF jawan suffered grievous wounds who later succumbed in the hospital.

“Constable Jai Prakash was hit by Pakistani hostile fire when he was on a ‘naka’ duty. He was rushed to RS Pora where he succumbed to his wounds. We retaliated to Pakistani firing by using the automatics,” he said.

BSF has lodged a protest with Pakistani rangers against this incident. “The flag meeting has been convened to register our protest,” Oberio said. “It is the first major violation on the IB after July,” he said.

However, the Pakistani army regulars have violated ceasefire several times in the last few weeks on the Line of Control in Poonch sector of Jammu.

On May 5, Pakistani army violated the border ceasefire by resorting to unprovoked firing on four Indian posts in Nangi-Takri area along the LoC in Krishanagahti sub-sector of Poonch, minutes after its foreign secretary Salman Bashir warned New Delhi against any hot pursuit.

On April 23, Pakistani troops resorted to unprovoked firing which lasted for 10-15 minutes at Banbat along the LoC in Poonch sector.

Last year total 44 cases of ceasefire violations by Pakistani army were reported along the borders in J&K.
