Chidambaram followers go overboard with sycophancy and hail him as future chief minister as well as future prime minister.
Union Home Minister P Chidambaram, a severe critic of Hindu fundamentalism, was caught in the wrong foot by the Sangh Parivar for portraying himself as Lord Krishna.
Residents of Chennai were in a for a surprise on Friday morning when they saw huge cut outs of the home minister dressed as Lord Krishna looking down at them from all vantage points in the city.
Chidambaram’s customary starched white cotton shirt has been replaced by a veshti. Instead of iPod and mobile phone, he is shown holding a divine flute.
Friday was the 66th birthday of Chidambaram and his followers in the city went overboard with all kinds of sycophancy. He was hailed as future chief minister as well as future prime minister.
“This portrayal of the home minister as Lord Krishna has hurt our religious sentiments and we filed a complaint with the commissioner of police,” Arjun Sampath, Hindu Makkal Katchi, a Sangh Parivar outfit, told DNA.
He said it is not advisable for the country’s home minister to identify with one particular religion or God. “It is a matter of insult for the Hindu community because Chidambaram failed miserably in protecting the lives of thousands of people who fell victims to the machinations of terrorists. Lord Krishna has never let his devotees down,” said Sampath.
BR Haran, a senior political observer and columnist, said there was nothing new in this kind of sycophancy displayed usually by cadres of the DMK and the Congress. “There are many posters all over the state depicting Karunanidhi as the reincarnation of sage Thiruvalluvar,” said Haran.
Chidambaram is already fighting a case of electoral malpractices in the Madras High Court filed by Raja Kannapaan of the AIADMK whom he defeated in the 2009 Lok Sabha election.
Besides this, this terrorist attacks in different parts of the country have made Chidambaram vulnerable to the Opposition diatribe. “He may need a lot of blessings to overcome the odds,” Haran added.
Karthi Chidambaram, the home minister’s son, refused to comment on the issue.
