So what if one is a rag picker, doesn’t he/she have the basic right to peaceful life and mental health? Apparently, the Government Railway Police personnel at the Indore station don’t think so.

A 12-year-old boy has lost his mental stability, after a GRP head contable forced him to collect severed parts of a man run over by train at Indore railway station. Firoz was rushed to a psychiatrist on Friday after he showed abnormal behaviour.

Four days ago, a GRP head constable gave him Rs 100 and asked him to collect parts of an unidentified body from the tracks. Firoz collected the severed parts in a sack, which was then taken away on a pushcart in full public view on September 26.
GRP superintendent of police Jitendra Kushwah said, “The child showed erratic behavior… he was sent for a mental examination.”
Firoz was later shifted to a special juvenile protection home in Pardeshipura. He would be moved to a child care and protection home in the morning, sources said.

The police could not find the boy’s parents who move on trains and stay at railway stations. Firoz’s friends said he could not be comforted and continued to scream all night. “He was a bold boy and would venture out in dark lanes even at midnight. But now he is afraid of even his shadow,” Rahim, who claimed to be his elder brother, said.

Dr Ramghulam Razdan, head of the psychiatry department at MGM Medical College, said the incident has either led to a permanent phobic reaction on Firoz or he has developed a psychotic behavior.

Sources at the railway station said the police usually utilised services of one Shera, 26, who grew up at the station. He was not around on the day of the incident. Several people who saw Firoz lifting the body parts complained to the authorities.

Subsequently, GRP divisional police chief Kushwah transferred five personnel and suspended the head constable who gave him the money.

Immediately after the action against the GRP personnel, Firoz feared retaliation and fled to Omkareshwar, around 85 km from here, his friends claimed. He returned on Thursday.

The District Child Rights Protection Forum has sought registration of criminal cases against the policemen involved. It threatened to move the national human rights commission over the issue.

Tapan Bhattacharya, a member of the forum, said: “Merely suspending the policemen would not solve the purpose. An FIR should be lodged against them so that it acts as a deterrent.”
