Orissa achieves 8.66 mtpa steel production by March 2011

The assessment came during a review of 50 MoU signing steel companies which together proposed to invest Rs2,13,969 crore.

Though mega steel projects like Posco and ArcelorMittal were yet to take off due to different problems, Orissa had achieved 8.66 million metric tonnes per annum (mtpa) steel production at an investment of Rs56,090 crore in the private sector by March, 2011, official sources said today.
    
The assessment came during a review of 50 MoU signing steel companies which together proposed to invest Rs2,13,969 crore.
    
While Bhusan Steel Limited notched up steel production of 3 mtpa by March, 2011, Bhusan Power & Steel Limited also produced 1.5 mtpa of steel during the same period.
    
Other companies which produced steel included OCL Iron and Steel Limited (0.76 mtpa), SSP Steel & Power Limited (0.29 mtpa), Narbheram Power & Steel (P) Limited (0.27 mtpa).
    
The companies having produced 0.25 mtpa steel were: Aarti Steel Limited, SMC Power Generation Ltd, MSP Metaliks Ltd and Action Ispat & Power (P) Ltd.
    
"Of the 50 MoU signing steel manufacturing companies, 29 have reached different stages of production while work for other units are going on," steel and mines minister Raghunath Mohanty told reporters here today.
    
Besides steel, the 29 companies together have achieved production of 7.299 mtpa of sponge iron, 1.07 mtpa MBF and 0.29 mtpa other items, he said.
    
The steel companies also produced 1069 MW of electricity in their respective captive power plants, the minister said.
    
Claiming that the steel units have generated employment for 75,681 persons, the minister said while 23,361 youths got direct employment, the sector provided indirect employment to 52,320 people.
    
Of the 23361 people getting direct employment in steel sector, 16,266 were from within the state while 38,575 people from state got indirect employment, he said.
