Opposition parties today criticised the Jayalalithaa government’s decision to convert Anna Centenary Library, built by the previous DMK regime, into a super speciality paediatric hospital and urged the ruling AIADMK not to practice "vendetta politics".

Leader of the opposition in the assembly, Vijayakant said there was no need for such a move and a new separate hospital could be constructed elsewhere in the state. He suspected this was being done just because it was built during the DMK rule.

"Regime change is common in a democracy. But changing all a previous government did results in wastage of taxpayers’ money. Therefore, the library should not be shifted, keeping in mind people’s welfare,” he said in a statement.

The CPI(M) state secretariat also condemned the move, saying it smacked of vendetta politics "as it seems that the government has arrived at the decision only because the library was constructed in the previous DMK government.

While the government's intention to set up a hospital is welcome, why was no action taken to upgrade the Institute of Child Health and Hospital for Children or the one at Stanley Hospital, both in Chennai, party’s state unit secretary G Ramakrishnan asked

"Instead of such vendetta politics, constructive politics should be the approach. The decision to shift the library (to the DPI Campus) should be withdrawn and it should be allowed to function from there itself," he said.

PMK founder Dr S Ramadoss  made a similar plea, saying that it was not practically  possible to shift the library. It had been very useful for many persons, including students, the visually impaired and research scholars among others.

“It is condemnable that the library is being shifted only because it was constructed in the previous rule. This move should be shelved and Chief Minister Jayalalithaa should announce that the library will continue to function from the existing place itself, “ he said in a statement.

Jayalalithaa had announced yesterday that the library will be shifted to Directorate of Public Instruction (DPI) campus and a Super-speciality paediatric hospital would come up there.
