Ahmedabad: A year has passed since the death of two Asaram Gurukul students, Dipesh and Abhishek, but not much is known about the manner in which they died. Preliminary police investigation has revealed that the two boys could have drowned in the Sabarmati river from where their bodies were fished out on July 5, 2008. But the parents of the two boys are not ready to accept that the kids died by drowning in the river behind the Gurukul, near Motera stadium.

The CID (crime) has so far recorded as many as 190 statements, which include 116 statements of Ashram sadhaks, 50 statements of students of Asaram Gurukul, and 23 statements of residents of Motera village. Apart from that, the agency has conducted lie-detector tests on five sadhaks and staff members. It also summoned Asaram Bapu and his son, Narayan Sai, and recorded their statements.

Dipesh's father Prafull Vaghela, however, is not happy with the pace of investigation. "They have not arrested even a single person in the case. They have also not found the exact escape route from the hostel to the spot of death,'' Vaghela said. He alleged that the investigating agency and the Sabarmati police had failed to collect the evidence that could have brought the case to a satisfactory conclusion. "I was present at the spot where the bodies were found, but I was not told to sign on the panchnama. The bodies were removed without taking pictures of their exact position," Vaghela said.

The dog squad, too, was not called and what remained of the evidence was lost when the water level in the river rose, he said. The CID (crime) had even demanded a report from the Narmada Water Project on the water released into the river. The post-mortem report said that the bodies were mutilated and decomposed. Whichever body part was examined by doctors, there were no injury marks showing a struggle or assault. No chemical poison was detected. Despite the post-mortem report and the FSL report, the CID had not pointed to any specific cause of death. Apart from the CID (crime), a parallel probe was conducted by the Trivedi Commission.
