Gujarat may have transformed itself into Vibrant Gujarat over the past few years, but the female workforce in the state has gained little.

Government data shows that the fairer sex accounts for only one in seven jobs in the organised sector in the state, a ratio that has not risen for many years.

Figures provided in The Socio Economic Review 2011-12 show that total workforce of the organised sector in the state stood at 21 lakh in 2010-11.

Of these, women accounted for 3.07 lakh jobs, that is 14.62% of the total employment.

In the year 2009-10, the total workforce in the organised sector stood at 19.82 lakh, while women, with 2.89 lakh jobs had a share of 14.58%.

The case was the same in the year before that, when total number of jobs was 19.04 lakh, while women accounted for 2.81 lakh or 14.76% share of the jobs.

However, a senior government official said lower share of women in the organised sector could be due to the fact that many women in the state are self employed.

"Also, a large number of women are employed in small units," said the official.

The figures compiled provide information of all private sector units and firms that have a workforce of ten or more. Units having a workforce of less than ten are not included.

What is interesting is that share of women in the workforce in public sector has gone up in recent years, but it has declined marginally in the private sector.

And this is when the state government claims to have successfully attracted investments running into lakhs of crores.

According to statistics available, women accounted for 19% employment in the public sector in 2007-08, which rose to 21.05% in 2008-09, to 21.25% in 2009-10 and went up further to 22.19% in 2010-11.

As far as private sector is concerned, share of women in the workforce came down from 10.26% in 2007-08 to 10.22% in 2008-09, to 10.20% in 2009-10 and fell further to 10.02% in  2010-11.

The number of women employed in private sector stood at 1.08 lakh in 2007-08, which rose to 1.31 lakh in 2010-11.
Overall, share of women in the workforce has remained steady around 14.50% over the last three to four years.
